Enthroned
Towards the Skullthrone of Satan
[Blackened]
Wow!! Enthroned have completely shaken off their "boring" side, and have
come up with a hate filled, semi-depressing, and all-together much
improved album. After the terribly boring (and at times silly)
"Prophecies of Pagan Fire", the band have come up with some great riffs,
improved vocals, and amazing session drumming. Most of you will have
heard of the band by now because of the suicide of their drummer
Cernunnos, but don't let that get in the way of what truly is a solid
album.
By the looks of the intro to this review, I'm setting your standards way
to high, and should thus lower them to make the album a tad more
appealing. This is in no way the greatest release, in no way anywhere as
good as some stuff that has come out this year, or in the slightest bit
original. But it's such an improvement over the first album, and also
holds some actually interesting music, that it deserves credit. The
vocals are so now hold their own style, and sound quite demonic, the
guitars are VERY impressive in terms of fantastic riffs, and the
drumming is fucking amazing.
As I just mentioned, the guitars come up with some fantastic melodies
and riffs. They're generally very fast played (the music here is fast
paced), and at times no less than epic sounding. The band are obviously
talented at pairing music and vocals as well, since the vocals flow very
smoothly with the music (listen to when he says "Ashes to ashes, dust to
dust" during the final song), and the drums (the drummer hits the
cymbals SO much!!! Fucking excellent!!) set a fantastic pace for the
general sound. At times the album falls into the "Prophecies of Pagan
Fire" boredom trap, but is usually saved with a great riff and blast
beat. The album, much like the first one is topped off with a great (and
quite chilling/haunting) final song (more bands should do this, rather
than saving all the best music for the first few tracks) "Hertogenwald".
Impressive to say the least. I tip my hat to the band for coming up with
a great album, solid as hell, and wonderfully sad sounding at times. The
next album from these guys, as long as they don't get too much fame from
this album and come up with a rubbish pop CD, will most likely be most
amazing.
