Disastrous Murmur
Rhapsodies in Red
[Osmose/JL America]

Along with Beherit and Deteriorate, Disastrous Murmur's CD was/is one of the few interesting releases to see the light day on JL America. Technically, the band was only average, and their music was no better than anything else released at the time. I don't deny that, since it's hard to say "Disastrous Murmur were an original and enticing band". While listening to the CD though, they do create a few interesting songs.

One of the many Morbid Angel style bands to pop up during this period, Disastrous Murmur didn't have the technical skills or production values to produce anything more than a sub-standard release. What's interesting about this recording though is the usage of actual synth within the songs. They pop up in every few songs, and actually add some actual mood. Naturally this is something every other MA influenced band with little technical skill or studio time was incapable of doing.

Overall, this is a less than great release. But if you see it on a list, try picking it up in a tape trade. Not exactly a standout release during that somewhat muddy period of death metal, but it's still a good deal more honest and varied than so much other '91-93 death metal.
