Sarcophagus
A Requiem to the Death of Passion
[Nightfall]
This disc destroys! Violent, punishing, and blacker than black metal
with a certain 'something' to it. I'll admit I fucking hated their last
CD for various reasons. First off, I enjoyed them more when they were a
death metal band. And of course it was sort of silly watching them
change their image so quickly. I assume they've had to live that down
for quite some time now, and everyone can happily concentrate on their
music.
And what a fucking disc this is! Ultra-fast, brutal, raw and incredibly
sick black metal. It's all played at super fast speeds, with Mr.Harris'
sick vocals spewing all over the place. Excellent riffs, tight drumming,
and some excellent usage of morbid keyboards make this a fine release
indeed.
I really enjoy the vocals on this release. They sound nothing like
Mr.Harris' vocals on his other project, Judas Iscariot. Rather, they're
quite heavily pushed, incredibly tight, and have a powerful and raw
sound that can be heard spitting up from the throat. The riffs destroy
as well! They're played at blazing fast speeds, and create a powerful
and epic atmosphere. Very far from mindless, they bring to mind images
of glory and pure hatred!
To add to the raw and hateful atmosphere, as I mentioned before, are
some small keyboard bits here and there. They work out quite nicely, and
further the triumphant feel of the music. I guess my only complaint
would be the semi-thin production. With a thicker and perhaps more
extreme production, Sarcophagus could have a flawless disc on their
hands. A worthy purchase by all means though!
