Nahash
Nocticula Hecate
[independent]

Nahash have been one of the busier bands in the underground scene lately, mainly because they've been receiving good press, have re-released this demo, and have released a CD on French cult label Drakkar Records. I don't exactly agree with the critics though, since the music found herein is less than great, even though in a technical way it's above average. Most of it is pretty straight forward black metal, filled with a nice sense of rawness, fairly fast paced, and thanks to the vocals, also quite evil sounding. Referring to the vocals, it's seems the band has used some effects to heighten the feel of them, since it's sound at some times like an echo chamber is going on, and at other times as if multiple vocalists of different styles are going at it. Interesting at least, unlike the music. Filled with some nice technical sections, and some well done-solos, the music as a whole just doesn't work. Sounding very Greek at times, (they refer to it as "Black Metal done in a numb and occult way, which is true actually) everything moves forward in a fashion we've all heard thousands of times before. Just fast, buzzing, and angry sounding. Nothing mind blowing exactly, but I've heard the CD is much better, and will recommend checking that out before investing in this.
